Here’s Part 2 of my global tour of must-visit modern art museums!
For abstract art enthusiasts (like you and I), visiting modern art museums can be the highlight of any holiday trip. These institutions around the world offer a unique glimpse into contemporary creativity and cultural expression. Check these out:
Nestled in People’s Park, MOCA Shanghai is a leading force in China’s contemporary art scene. Since its founding in 2005, MOCA has showcased an exciting range of local and international artists. With rotating exhibitions that often challenge conventional art forms, the museum acts as a dynamic bridge between Chinese art and global trends. MOCA is one of the best places for exploring Asia's rapidly evolving modern art landscape.
Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai (MoCA).
This architectural stunner in Spain’s Basque Country, designed by Frank Gehry, is known for both its dramatic, curving structure and its impressive collection. Inside, the Guggenheim houses bold modern installations that make it a cultural landmark for art and architecture lovers alike.
The architecturally-stunning Guggenheim Bilbao in Spain.
Overlooking Sydney Harbour, the MCA is dedicated to contemporary art. The museum showcases Australian, especially Indigenous, artists alongside international ones. Its thought-provoking exhibitions, diverse programs, and dedication to education make the MCA a hub for the cultural conversations that shape Australia’s contemporary art scene.
Pablo Picasso's Guernica at Madrid'snational art museum, the Reina Sofia.
Another great Spanish museum! Madrid’s Reina Sofia is home to Picasso’s iconic "Guernica" (above), which he painted in response to the bombing of civilians during the Spanish Civil War. Its collection spans the 20th century through to today, featuring international artists along with big-name Spanish artists, such as Dalí and Miró alongside international innovators.
The Stedelijk is a cornerstone of the Dutch modern art world. Known for its bold exhibitions and a mixed focus on art, design, and new media, the Stedelijk features both renowned and emerging artists. Its permanent collection includes works by Van Gogh, Mondrian, and Rothko, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in the evolution of modern art.
