For the modern art enthusiast, the world is a vast and exciting canvas. Beyond the well-trodden paths of the MoMA and the Tate (noted in Part 1), lie hidden gems and innovative spaces showcasing the best in contemporary art. Here are another 5 must-visit galleries to add to your art-loving itinerary:
Nestled in Hyde Park, Serpentine (formerly known as the Serpentine Galleries) offer a unique blend of contemporary art and architecture. Two distinct buildings—the original Serpentine Gallery and the striking, temporary Serpentine Pavilion designed by a different architect each year—provide a dynamic backdrop for thought-provoking exhibitions. Here are a couple pavilions from recent years:
First: Serpentine Pavilion by architects Selgascano (Jose Selgas and Lucia Cano) in 2015. Second: Serpentine Pavilion by architect Diébédo Francis Kéré in 2017.
This iconic building, with its vibrant facade and exposed structural elements, is as much an architectural masterpiece as it is an art museum. Inside, you'll find a vast collection of 20th- and 21st-century art, including works by Picasso, Matisse, and Warhol.
Centre National D'Art et de Culture Georges-Pampidou (aka Centre Pampidou), Paris.
Located on the vibrant Millennium Park, the MCA Chicago boasts a renowned collection of contemporary art, with a particular focus on artists from the Midwest. The museum also hosts innovative exhibitions and public programs, making it a hub for the city's art scene.
Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.
Housed in a former railway station, this impressive museum showcases a significant collection of contemporary art, including works by Joseph Beuys, Sigmar Polke, and Gerhard Richter. The vast, industrial space provides a unique setting for experiencing these powerful works.
This privately-owned museum, designed by David Chipperfield, houses a world-class collection of contemporary Latin American art, alongside works by international artists. The museum's commitment to showcasing emerging artists and fostering dialogue makes it a vital cultural institution in Mexico City.
