Abstract Expressionists We Love: David Fredrik Moussallem

on March 04, 2024

David Fredrik Moussallem
Toronto, Canada

Although David Fredrik's art is not technically Abstract Expressionism, I still love it. David's art can be classified as "post-graffiti" (which is a style that I'll write about in the future)—deconstructed collage paintings with obvious influences from his appreciation of global subcultures and street art

David's paintings have that distressed city wall look, layered with old posters and graffiti, onto which he blends calligraphy and blurred color fields. He carves into these mixed media surfaces, reminding me of grid patterns on a big city map. All of these aspects of his paintings are clearly influenced by his academic training in graphic design and typography.

Each painting feels like it holds layers of stories—think of a busy city neighbourhood with all the noises and lives happening all around. The abstraction of the surfaces and carvings evoke the intensity of urban life and, simultaneously, the fluidity of it all.
