John Goetz

Born in Switzerland and growing up in Montreal and Toronto, John Goetz now calls Santa Monica home. He is said to have started out in graphic design school, but felt confined by the rigidity of design, which ultimately led him to the freedom of Abstract Expressionism.

There’s a lightness in Goetz’s paintings that I like. This can be explained by Goetz’s stated reason for painting—he paints because it makes him happy. I’m particularly drawn to Goetz’s more recent paintings, which are usually large (e.g., 96” x 72”) with bright and usually warm yet bold colors.

His recent paintings consist of layers of gestural lines, thick and thin, that seem to express different tempos of life—sometimes playful and immediate, while other times calmer yet active, like the busy life in the background of any street scene. And it’s these lines that fill the paintings with movement, expressing raw human emotions and a sense of exuberance.
