Abstract expressionist Mike O’Guinn is based in central coastal California. Even though Mike’s relatively new to abstract expressionist painting (he began in 2021), his work conveys a maturity and confidence that usually takes years to develop. Perhaps that professionalism comes from already having an established career in law. Regardless, Mike's paintings are absolutely captivating.

His spontaneous process—"a series of quick choices made in the moment,” as he explains—captures the true essence of expressionism. His paintings are layered with large brushstrokes and energetic mark-making, producing an urban sensibility that I love.

I also appreciate the tensions within and between some of Mike's pieces. So, while some paintings are completely covered with his dynamic expressions, others consist of a dualism of quiet minimalism and bits of loud expressionism. When these two contrasting styles are put side by side, as I’ve seen in some photos of his exhibited works (below), the tension created is just so good.
