Sami Korkiakoski

Sami Korkiakoski has an MA from the University of Art and Design Helsinki (2007) and an MFA from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki (2013). He creates large-scale, colorful, and energetic Abstract Expressionist paintings.

I first found Sami on Instagram where he sometimes posts videos of his frenetic painting process. This is what struck me most about Sami's work—the central role played by energy and movement. Witnessing the fast-pace of his creative process is mesmerizing—he paints with both spray and brush simultaneously, using both hands, and with his entire body engaged in the act of creation.
In his latest works, color emerges as a powerful element, standing alongside the frenzied but compelling rhythm of the lines. Color choices seem purely intuitive based on their emotive impact. Sami's use of color creates striking contrasts against the canvas background while also amplifying the intensity of the black gestures and markings—Abstract Expressionism at its finest.
