Choosing Abstract Wall Art: Size Matters!

on September 02, 2024

When collectors ask for advice about sizing, I tell them what designers do to achieve a balanced aesthetic—they follow a few key rules. Here are designers' top four rules for selecting the right size of abstract art for any space:

Abstract Wall Art Size Rule #1: Wall Proportion

The artwork should occupy roughly 60-75% of the available wall space. To determine this, measure your wall’s width and multiply by 0.6 and 0.75. The result is the ideal width range for your painting.

Rule #1: Your abstract painting should occupy 60-75% of the wall space... Left: Too small. Right: Just right.

Abstract Wall Art Size Rule #2: Room Size and Ceiling Height

The scale of the room influences the size of the art. In rooms with high ceilings, taller pieces can create a dramatic effect by drawing the eye upward. For smaller spaces, medium or smaller-sized paintings work best to avoid overwhelming the room.

Rule #2: Choose art the emphasizes the scale of your space.

Abstract Wall Art Size Rule #3: Furniture Proportion

If hanging art above a sofa or console, the width of the artwork should be around 60-75% of the furniture’s width. This creates visual balance and prevents the art from appearing too heavy or inconsequential.

Rule #3: Your abstract painting should occupy 60-75% of the width of the piece of furniture it's hanging above.

Abstract Wall Art Size Rule #4: Grouping or Single Piece

Large walls can accommodate one big statement piece or a group of smaller pieces arranged gallery-style. For gallery walls, ensure there is even spacing between each piece to maintain balance.

By following these designer-approved rules, you’ll get the effect you want in your space and you'll love your painting all the more!
