I love lively, complex abstract expressionist paintings, I've always been drawn to the power of simple abstract art. Simple abstract paintings are usually characterized by a limited color palette and bold forms, and they seem to possess a raw, unfiltered quality that inevitably pulls me in.
A simple abstract painting by abstract expressionist Franz Kline.
Perhaps the allure of simple abstract art comes from it's purity of expression, which I find both profound and evocative. A single bold brushstroke or a solitary drop of color can play with my emotions, allowing me to engage with the painting in a deeply personal way. That's really it—the beauty of simple abstract paintings lies in this power to evoke complex feelings through the most basic visual elements.
A peek inside the Mark Rothko retrospective by the Foundation Luis Vuitton, which I visited in March 2024.
Take the simple abstract art of Mark Rothko, for example. His color-fields paintings look simple enough—composed of large, rectangular "fields" of color. But soft edges and layered hues in Rothko's paintings create a kind of meditative experience. It's a powerful experience to see Rothko's paintings in person. I know this because I got to visit the Mark Rothko retrospective exhibit in Paris in March 2024. It was awesome (in the truest sense of the word).
Simple abstract art invites us to slow down and reflect. It reminds us that sometimes, less truly is more. It's the stripped-down, honest approach that I love about simple abstract art.
