Maryam Eivazi
Karaj, Iran
I really enjoy Maryam Eivazi's approach to the abstract expressionist genre. In her MFA studies in Bologna, Italy, she developed a distinctive style with immersive scenes, abstract symbols, and expressive brushstrokes. Her recent work features vibrant scribbles, captivates with its playful vibrancy, and I see hints of Cy Twombly and Basquiat in her paintings.

I also feel that Maryam's unique color palette creates a distinctly feminine quality in her abstract expressionist style. This latter observation seems rather poignant, given her background as a Middle Eastern woman and descriptions of her creative practice as one of resistance and finding liberation in the borderless freedom of abstract expressionism.
This year (2023) marks the start of Maryam’s foray into the US art scene, and I think she’s an artist to watch—her unique abstractions, vivid colors, and fearless experimentation leave a lasting impression.
