The Definition of Abstract Art

What Is Abstract Art?

The definition of abstract art refers to a style of visual expression that does not attempt to accurately represent the physical world. Instead, it uses colors, shapes, lines, and textures to convey emotions, ideas, or concepts. Unlike realism, which depicts objects and scenes as they appear, abstract art moves away from the recognizable, which allows for a more personal interpretation.

The Origins of Abstract Art

The definition of abstract art began taking shape in the early 20th century as artists sought new ways of expressing themselves beyond the traditional and classical standards of representation. Pioneers such as Wassily Kandinsky, Hilma af Klint, Piet Mondrian, and Sonia Delaunay explored the use of pure form and color to create meaning. This movement coincided with advancements in philosophy, science, and psychology, which encouraged new ways of perceiving reality.

Different Types of Abstract Art

Abstract art takes many forms, including geometric abstraction, where artists use structured shapes and patterns, and abstract expressionism, which emphasizes gestural brushstrokes and spontaneity. Other variations include color field painting, which involves large expanses of color, and biomorphic abstraction, which features fluid organic shapes.

Why Abstract Art Matters

When you understand the definition of abstract art, especially if you're someone who just doesn't 'get it,' that knowledge can help you engage with it on a deeper, more subjective level—so you can truly enjoy it. Abstract art encourages imaginations and emotional responses, an inevitable process of creating personal connection with the art. The rebellion that is abstract art breaks free from traditional representation and opens new possibilities for artistic expression and interpretation.
